DSS CD-ROM IS NOT RECOGNIZED
ISSUE
After inserting the correct DSS CD-ROM, RealSkyView continually gives the message: “Please insert Disk x of 8.”
RESOLUTION
User should update to RealSkyView v4.00.001 (or later), which should address the problem.
If the problem persists, the CD-ROM driver should be updated (usually available from the manufacturer’s website). If none of the above works:
The error message “Please insert disk x of 8” appears after the user has inserted the correct Digitized Sky Survey CD-ROM, the operating system has not recognized that a new CD-ROM disk has been inserted. Therefore, NO application will be able to read files from the disk until the operating system recognizes the newly inserted disk.
To force the operating system to recognize the CD-ROM, do the following:
On Window 3.1
Without closing RealSkyView, open File Manager and attempt to log onto the CD-ROM drive. When the system recognizes the newly inserted CD-ROM, switch back to RealSkyView (press ALT+TAB) and continue. The user may want to try to obtain the latest device driver (software) from the manufacturer of the CD-ROM player to attempt to solve this issue.
We strongly recommend that Windows 3.1 users upgrade to Windows 3.11 at a minimum, or Windows 95.
On Windows 95
Click the right mouse button on the Start button and click Explore. From the Explorer window, navigate to the CD-ROM drive and attempt to log on to it.IMPORTANT NOTE: Mounting a CD-ROM drive (that is, having the operating system recognize that a new RealSky CD has been inserted) can take up to 20 seconds on a PC, and over 30 seconds on the Macintosh. Until the volume is mounted, a computer cannot read a CD-ROM disk. The RealSky CDs have been formatted with 512 bytes per allocation unit. This improves the data storage efficiency, however it is not recognized as quickly by the operating system.
The user should wait approximately 30 seconds after a new CD is inserted before attempting to display the new target (or continually click OK on the “Insert the RealSky Disk x of 8 message” until the system can read the CD-ROM, though this will not work on some configurations).
