SETTING UP THESKY6 AND CCDSOFT TO RETRIEVE DIGITIZED SKY SURVEY IMAGES

    ISSUE

I want to retrieve images from the Digitized Sky Survey using the Take Image command from CCDSoft’s camera simulator, and have CCDSoft get the coordinates of the Digitized Sky Survey image from TheSky6’s telescope simulator.

    RESOLUTION

Yes this is possible. And it’s a really cool feature, too. First, ensure that CCDSoft is configured correctly to retrieve Digitized Sky Survey images.

    1. Exit CCDSoft. Use the Task Manager to make sure CCDSoft is not in memory, or these settings will not work.
    2. Click Start | Run. Enter RegEdit and then click OK. Make sure to backup your Registry settings first.
    3. From the Registry Editor, set HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Software Bisque/CCDSoft/Simulator/m_bDSSSim to 1. This key should exist and does not need to be created.
    4. Click Registry | Exit.
    5. Launch CCDSoft.
    6. Take an image and see a DSS image. If TheSky6 is running, and connected to a telescope, the DSS image represents the right ascension and declination of the telescope.

    This procedure assumes:

    • You have the Digitized Sky Survey (or RealSky) installed all the settings for retrieving Digitized Sky Survey images working correctly in CCDSoft.  In other words, make sure you can manually view DSS images in CCDSoft. See the CCDSoft manual for details.
    • You have setup and connected TheSky6’s telescope simulator and slewed to (or synced on) the desired object.
