NO TELESCOPE MOTION DURING CALIBRATION USING DIRECT GUIDE
ISSUE
Paramount mounts calibrate and autoguide correctly using “Camera Relays”. However, calibration fails with the error message:”Error: Invalid motion in X (or Y) axis”Using the Direct Guide setting.
RESOLUTION
This error is most likely because the calibration settings are not correct for Direct Guide.
- From the Autoguider window, click Settings.
- If Relays is selected from the Autoguide Using list, enter a value of 10 seconds in the X-Relay and Y-Relay Calibration Times number boxes.
- If Direct Guide is selected from the Autoguide Using list, enter a value of 100 arcseconds in the X-Relay and Y-Relay Calibration Times number boxes.
- Click OK.
- Calibrate the guider.
-
The calibration time “units” for Relays are in seconds that the relay is closed. Bad guider cables are a common cause for calibration failure (the mount will not respond to camera relay moves when the guider cable is not working, so calibration is impossible.
- To verify the autoguider relays are working properly, take successive exposures; during each exposure, on the Camera window, press and hold one of the +X, -X, +Y and -Y buttons under Autoguider Relays. For each relay move button test, stars must show elongation in the direction of the relay move. If not, the guider cable is not operational, or the camera relays are not operational, or the mount’s guider port is not operational (use an electronics spray cleaner to clean all guider cables, guider port and camera relay ports).
-
The calibration time “units” for Direct Guide is more closely related to (but not exactly) arcseconds of telescope movement. If you encounter error code 554, 555, 556, or 557, “Motion too small during +X/-X/+Y/-Y move. Increase calibration times.” increase the settings described above.
