UPPER AND LOWER MAGNITUDE LIMIT CONFUSION

ISSUE

Inputting an upper and lower bounds for the magnitude limit did not behave as expected.

RESOLUTION

The Brightest/Faintest magnitude limit allows the user to display whatever range of object brightness desired. Brightest means that objects with magnitudes greater than this value are displayed. Similarly, Faintest means that objects with magnitudes less than this value are displayed. These options are non-mutually exclusive.

Not all objects have a defined magnitude (such as very large, or very irregular objects). These will be shown to have a magnitude 30 in TheSky’s Object Information box, which should be interpreted as “undefined.” These objects are not necessarily faint; some may, in fact, be quite bright. The creators of the specific catalog merely did not determine a magnitude value for the object. For display purposes, TheSky treats these undefined magnitudes as zero. Because of this, if objects with undefined magnitudes are not to be displayed, the magnitude filter for that object type should be set to a Brightest value greater than zero (e.g. 0.1, or 1).
